The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 1 in 100 children are on the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, financial barriers, a shortage of qualified therapists, and prolonged waiting lists significantly impede access to these essential therapies. Even in areas where therapists are available, the number of autistic children per therapist varies widely, ranging from fewer than 18 to over 328. This discrepancy results in many children missing out on critical early diagnosis and timely intervention. 

In the UK, the lifetime cost for an individual with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and an intellectual disability can soar to approximately $2.2 million. Families endure an average wait of 375 days for an autism diagnosis, with the National Health Service (NHS) waiting lists swelling to about eight years post-pandemic, while private referrals may take up to two years. 

The Situation in the UAE 

In the UAE, the challenges mirror those faced globally. With an estimated 20 to 29 children per 10,000 on the autism spectrum, therapy costs can escalate up to Dh50,000 per month. Service rates range from Dh450 to Dh1,000 per hour, placing an enormous financial strain on families. 

In an interview with Khaleej Times, Lina Shadid, Health Industries Lead at PwC Middle East, underscored the severe economic and social ramifications of autism in the UAE. The study reveals that families in the UAE can spend over Dh1 million in just four years on care and education for a child with autism.
